"De inkt die tijdens het tatoeëren diep in de lederhuid wordt geïnjecteerd, is een complexe mix van pigmenten, vloeistoffen en conserveringsmiddelen. Opvallend is dat veel van die pigmenten oorspronkelijk niet bedoeld zijn voor het menselijk lichaam, maar voor industriële toepassingen zoals autolak of printerinkt. […] Sommige inkt bevat sporen van zware metalen zoals nikkel, chroom en kobalt. […] Daarnaast komen er in tattoo-inkt ook organische stoffen voor, zoals azo-kleurstoffen en polycyclische aromatische koolwaterstoffen (PAK’s). Onder invloed van zonlicht of laserbehandeling kunnen deze stoffen afbreken tot mogelijk schadelijke verbindingen, die in laboratoriumstudies gelinkt zijn aan DNA-schade en kanker."
