Ine no Funaya is a small fishing village located in the northern part of the #Kyoto prefecture. In Ine evertything moves slowly, with shops closing at 5PM and no-one around after dinner. If you happen to be in the area, you should visit it, but please remember: Ine is a village where people live and work. Be respectful of its history and let it fill your heart with wonder. #Japan #slowtravel #travel #traveltips #SilentSunday

😋SWEETS🍡 From mid-April 'tsutsuji kinton' (つつじきんとん) are served in the tearoom. These sweets either mimic small round azalea bushes, or flowers growing out of rock crevices ('iwane-tsutsuji' 岩根つつじ 'azalea rooted amongst rocks'). #Kyoto #京都 #azalea #躑躅 #和菓子 #wagashi

🫘👹🪓DANCING DEMONS❤️💚🖤 One of Setsubun's (節分) liveliest festivals takes place at the small temple of Rozan-ji. At 3pm three oni (one red, one green, one black) appear before the main hall. Clasping flaming torches and mean-looking weapons, they begin to dance! #Kyoto #廬山寺

Strictly speaking, in modern terms, Hatsuyume (初夢) falls on January 2nd. People would generally not sleep on December 31st, so any January 1st dreams were examined on January 2nd. year's first dream- Mount Fuji is sold in Kyōto 初夢の不二の山売る都哉 -Kobayashi Issa (小林一茶), 1824. #Japan #Kyoto

In this busy twilight period between the old year and the new the 'Seven Gods of Fortune' (七福神) provide a useful service. As a group they can pretty much answer all your prayers, from health to happiness, from improved business to improved brain capacity. #Kyoto #Japan #七福神

On the south side of Ebisu-jinja's (ゑびす神社) main shrine building is a worn board. After praying before the shrine it is customary to knock on the board (to wake the somewhat hard of hearing Ebisu) and repeat the request to ensure it is answered. #Kyoto #Ebisu #ゑびす神社

Do you know #Ninshu ceramics? They come from #Kyoto and are handcrafted on the potter’s wheel, one by one, by local artisans. Each piece is unique, shaped and finished by hand; during firing, the glaze transforms and fuses with the clay, creating yohen, a distinctive effect that makes every cup slightly different from the next. #Japan #matcha #JapaneseCrafts @tea #tea 1/2

Morning worked in my hotel, made a trip to meet collaborators briefly, had lunch with them at the cafeteria. One showed me a pic of Jonangu taken yesterday, & on my 18 min train ride back to Sannomiya - looked up Jonangu location (it was in my bookmarks) & saw that it is 90 mins away with a rapid express from Sannomiya. Sped to hotel, dropped computer off, picked up camera and made it to the 2:07. Was at Jonangu at 3:40. Spent an excellent 45mins there! #Kyoto #Japan #Bloomscrolling #DasJP26

One of Kyōto's most photographed pieces of scenery is a stretch of garden behind Jōnan-gū's (城南宮) main shrine. Here winter and spring collide with plum blossoms cascading over fallen camellia flowers...bright dots in a verdant green carpet. #Jōnangū #城南宮 #Kyoto #京都 #Japan

Although oni are a common sight at Setsubun, Rozan-ji (廬山寺) has an origin story for its own 3 ogres. When the temple's founder, Ryōgen (良源 912-85), was in training he was bothered by 3 troublesome oni (or spirits, depending on what version of the tale you read). #Kyoto #鬼
