Finally finished my home energy monitor project this afternoon. This uses the infrared port of my Elster R1S hydro meter, read by a repurposed Blueline Innovations PowerCost Monitor sensor. The R1S meter outputs a 100ms wide IR pulse for every 1mWh or energy consumed. Home Assistant uses the ESPHome pulse meter platform to convert these pulses into both power (pulse rate) and energy (pulse counts) readings. The ESP32 fit nicely into a repurposed Raspberry Pi case. #homeassistant #esphome

The LetsEncrypt addon (well, certbot inside it) for #HomeAssistant seems to need an additional Route 53 permission now, if you’re using that for DNS verification. My TLS expiry notification spotted impending doom and the required perm was complained about in the log file. Updated my IAM Policy for it and all fixed 😮‍💨

Oh no! /s What a joyous sight! Our new Samsung TV will never see the outside world. It's connected to our network via ethernet, locked on a VLAN so Home Assistant can connect to it, but it can see nothing except my local DNS server (for now). I've preemptively blocked its WiFi MAC address in case anyone ever accidentally tries to "help" by connecting it to the WiFi. Fully working with Home Assistant. Dumb screen otherwise. Perfect. #homeassistant #samsung #tv #opnsense #firewall #privacy

@zrail@hachyderm.io Interesting. I have a good home assistant setup, but I’m currently using nodered completely separately on the pi for this. I’m just getting started with #esphome. I have a bunch of esp32s sitting around. The central nervous system of this thing is this 8-way relay. I control it with 8 GPIOs off the pi. Closing or opening a relay on the elegoo will cause 24VAC to go to the right place and make the right thing happen. If I can put esphome on an esp32 and control all 8 relays from that, I can do all the scenes and automation in home assistant. That would be super, because the whole family is all familiar with home assistant. Is it that simple? Pick 8 GPIOs on the esp32, and wire them up? Then just control everything in #homeassistant? https://us.elegoo.com/products/elegoo-8-channel-relay-module-kit

Just spent breakfast rebooting the universe as (it looks like) a #HomeAssistant update broke #Matter connectivity. Things seem to be stable now, so 🤞 😡

This is one of my life saving automations. If the freezer is open for more than 30 seconds then send an announcement every 10 seconds to my speakers. What's your best automation? #homeassistant

😛 #homeassistant #llmvision #ollama #reolink

I like ZigBee for Home-Automation 🙂

Hardware from many different manufacturers, all compatible with each other.

  • Philips
  • Ikea
  • Sonoff
  • Xiaomi

No proprietary bridges, no cloud, no vendor lock-in. Just some free and open source software (Zigbee2MQTT / Home Assistant) and a tiny USB dongle (ConBee II) as a network coordinator.

All meshing nicely and every grid-powered device effectively extends my network’s range by relaying datagrams.

Mastodon is 100% the early days of social media all over. Some of you will already be familiar with this story. My weather station (a very nice Netatmo that has served very well) crapped out after nearly 10 years of excellent service. I asked for recommendations here for a new station that would play nicely with #HomeAssistant, and hopefully, also HomeKit. I received *many* recommendations, with Ecowitt (and the brands it manufactures for) taking the lead. A connection on here offered me their *unopened* Ecowitt weather station for a very generous price. It arrived yesterday, and I set it up, and it's already doing a great job. Works offline, talks to Home Assistant without any problems. I just need to do a couple of bits of configuration jiggery-pokery and it will pass data to HomeKit. This is very much how things were when I first joined Twitter in 2007. In spite of attempts at #enshittification of everything, the #fediverse is putting up a good fight. May your day online be as satisfying as mine was yesterday.

I’ve been working on custom #MCP tools to better tie my stuff together. It’s connected to the Assist functionality in #HomeAssistant allowing me to do things like:

  • add items to grocery/personal/household to-do lists.
  • check or update quantities of items in my #HomeBox inventory
  • ask for weather forecasts for anywhere

So it looks like Unifi released an update to protect that targets this issue with Home Assistant. "Fixed an issue where motion events were not working in Home Assistant." Updating now. #Unifi #UnifiProtect #HomeAssistant https://community.ui.com/releases/UniFi-Protect-Application-7-0-64/472f8ffa-5a8f-42eb-9958-7377674f2b63

Learned recently that in a #HomeAssistant automation you can add a line of code in the YAML that will prevent the automation from exiting if it encounters an error. This is useful for actions that might not always work because of an unexpected state, but you still want it to go through the list without adding extra checks. In my case, my Taskmaster Tidbyt Flight automation was failing to remove the screen because the app was not active in the first Tidbyt in the sequence. Adding continue_on_error: true fixed this https://www.home-assistant.io/docs/scripts/#continuing-on-error

Literally talked about hacking Star Trek communicator badges with @sammachin@chaos.social at the London #HomeAssistant meetup this evening, then read this https://hackaday.com/2026/02/25/control-your-smart-home-with-trek-inspired-comm-badge/
