Fedi admins, you may want to defederate mastodon.cloud There's a scammer registered on mastodon.cloud who is currently spamming people all over the Fediverse (https://digipres.club/@timixretroplays/116400799417215833) Mastodon.cloud seems to be an unmoderated instance with open registration. It hasn't responded to multiple previous abuse reports (https://social.growyourown.services/@FediTips/115027459008099476) The admin of mastodon.cloud hasn't posted since February 2023 and its server software is very out of date. #FediBlock #FediAdmin #MastodonCloud

We're adding mastodon.cloud to our #Fediblock list due to the instance seemingly being abandoned with open signups and zero moderation. The burden of us suspending accounts locally is not practical when the instance is out of date and not being maintained. #Fediblock is being abused for harassment and revenge. Most of you know "Jimmy Truth" who has been suspended by almost every Mastodon instance so far for harassment, misinformation, transphobia, fascism, religious intolerance, and every other rule you can think of. His new tactic is to recommend fediblocks against instances that kick him off, ironically, listing through projection the very reasons he gets suspended. I know there are some admins who take these Fediblocks on faith, but don't become his tool for his revenge and harassment and just start blocking instances because they have the hashtag.

The Speakeasy added zeitgeist.blue, an AI designed scraping tool, to our blocklist due to its administrator's failure to respect the Mastodon social contract. The tool, in addition to feeding into AI, was coded to ingest DMs and non-public posts as well. We have, additonally, suspended the individual who coded the tool, @seldo@alpaca.gold.Their wlilingness to release such an invasive, poorly designed tool makes them a safety risk to the Speakeasy. #fediblock #AI

The creator is making pretty clear that it's designed this way to make it harder to block. Normally, you'd expect an LLM scraper to have a single (blockable) ActivityPub account doing the scraping. This is designed so that everybody who uses the service has their identities harvested to steal people's data on the app's behalf. #FediBlock #FediAdmin

Friendly reminder: last year I built FediMod FIRES, a protocol and reference server implementation for sharing moderation data. I haven't yet been able to get anyone to adopt it or even signal intent to adopt. But regularly I see people complaining about the lack of data sharing when it comes to moderation, especially for combating spam, scams, and harassment. The tool is there, please use it! Whilst I'm not actively working on FediMod FIRES this quarter, I did apply in November for a grant to continue that work, and last I heard a few weeks ago is that the grant made it to the next stage, so I may have some money again to fund development. It's not 1.0.0 yet, because I decided it needed more work for me to be happy to call it that, but it is usable! Installation is also super simple for data producers, literally two commands on debian or ubuntu boxes.
