Roosevelt elk (Cervus elaphus roosevelti), also known as wapiti, one of the largest mammals on Vancouver Island. I photographed it in the fall. He was looking at its harem. Very protective. Those wapitis are wild, not habituated to people, so it takes time and patience to locate them and then photograph them while keeping a respectful distance. #photography #wildlife #nature #VancouverIslandWildlife #VancouverIsland #BritishColumbia #Canada #WildlifeWednesday

Vancouver Island marmots will soon come out of hibernation. Some colonies are located on ski hills so they close the ski resort for a few weeks in April. This marmot is endemic to Vancouver Island. It's an endangered species that is making a remarquable recovery thanks to marmots.org #photography #wildlife #marmots #VancouverIslandWildlife #BritishColumbia #conservation #EndangeredSpecies

Just realized that March 23 is #WorldBearDay A bit late to the party but some of you probably know that they are one of my favourite subjects to photograph. I have a page in my portfolio dedicated to black bears: https://www.catherinebabault.com/black-bears-on-vancouver-island and another one for grizzly bears: https://www.catherinebabault.com/grizzly-bears-on-vancouver-island Here's a photo of a beautiful black bear during the salmon run on Vancouver Island. #photography #VancouverIslandWildlife #bears #wildlife

A California sea lion surfing the waves during the herring spawn last year. Do you know how to identify a California sea lion? They have a bump on their head. #photography #wildlife #SeaLion #HerringSpawn #VancouverIslandWildlife #VancouverIsland #BritishColumbia

Gulls hover over sea lions hoping to find herring scraps. The colour of the sea is due to a herring spawn. Photo taken last year. Des mouettes volètent au-dessus de lions de mer dans l'espoir de trouver des restants de hareng. La couleur de la mer provient du frai des harengs. Photo prise l'année dernière. #photography #photographie #HerringSpawn #wildlife #VancouverIsland #BritishColumbia #Canada #VancouverIslandWildlife

Be like a sea lion: eat, bark, belch, cause ruckus, sleep, repeat. 😆 Photo taken last March during the herring spawn. These sea lions overindulged on herring and were drifting in the sea. #photography #SeaLions #HerringSpawn #VancouverIslandWildlife #wildlife #VancouverIsland #BritishColumbia #Canada
