How am I supposed to assess and rank ARC grant applications that are riddled with LLM-generated or generative AI content? Guess I'll just have to send them back as un-assessable. This AI shenanigans is getting ridiculous! The entire research funding system could fall in a heap! The ARC bureaucracy cannot solve this problem alone though. (I am not talking about proposals to use machine learning to *analyse* data.) @ARC_Tracker@aus.social #academicchatter

Love this. A peer reviewed blank page was published in 1974, without revision. The unsuccessful self-treatment of a case of “writer's block” by Dennis Upper. Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis. https://doi.org/10.1901/jaba.1974.7-497a Credit: Found this gem via ‘stephenknowstuff’ on another platform #writersblock #academicchatter

I already shortened the paper in all the ways I could, there is barely enough space for missing abstract, and yet my supervisor wants to squeeze in couple paragraph from international collaborator. Forgive me, my future reviewer, 'cos the lettering in the images will probably be ant-sized. At least, those are vector images and nowadays everything is digital. #AcademicChatter

Okay, help: what's a good compromise for a whiteboard for one-off use in a lecture? I want to collect student ideas, group them together and talk them through interactively while showing the whiteboard on a screen. Nothing more. For a long time I would have used Flinga Whiteboard (https://flinga.fi/) but my employer stopped paying for it. They do pay for Miro but it's horrendously complicated to use, and a steep learning curve for a one-off activation exercise in class. Is there something simple, freely available (maybe - ideally - open source) that is at the Flinga end of complexity rather than Miro? #education #EdTech #whiteboard #AcademicChatter

I’ve been asked to sign a declaration of solidarity with academics at Ilia State University in Tbilisi, in response to legislative measures in Georgia that will cut student admissions and limit academic freedom. Does anyone have any good English-language resources about what these changes entail and how they are being receive? #AcademicChatter #Georgia #ISU #IliaStateUniversity

Professor Agatha "Agy" Nimble, the Pro Vice-Chancellor Education. She enters the room lightfooted, a winning smile on her face. She is the never-say-no Anglican Bishop, caring, soft-voiced, immovable. Professor Nimble does not teach anymore. But she runs her own workshops on how to transform your teaching. She absolutely loves every comment, idea, criticism made by a participant. She prepared a slide before the session, listing all the interesting things that participants have said and learnt during the day. She is the author of the University's "Teaching The Magical Way" strategy and heads the curriculum transfomation process. She may or may not believe in it herself, but she knows that she would find it easy to implement, if only she could clone herself sufficuently many times to place herself in each of our roles. Her workshop has shown us how to do it. She is very empathetic and she forgives us that we don't see the way yet. She will not change the plan. #AcademicChatter

Today is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. It’s important to remember that actively working towards a welcoming safe environment for everyone in science isn’t just the decent thing to do (I’d argue it’s the bare minimum), it also means we do better science! Take, for example, this study showing underrepresented groups innovate more than their peers (but their work is not taken up by the wider community): https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1915378117 #AcademicChatter #WomenInSTEM

Can anyone recommend me some (online available ;) ) CS textbook that explains Elias-Fano encoding (and SELECT queries on it specifically) in a readable manner? The original papers are annoying and my advisor just told me "it's popular enough that you can just ask your favourite LLM about it" and hell no #csacademia #csresearch #cs #academicchatter #shadowlibrary #bookrecommendations #bookrecs #llm

My university wasn’t listed in @ResearchOrgs@mastodon.social and guess what, proposing the addition was simple. If an org you know has a mistake or is missing take the 5 minutes to suggest a change.
