Once, a "black woman" told some quarrymen that if one of them had sex with her three times within an hour, she would be released from her curse. Alas, none of them rose to the challenge. #MythologyMonday https://wiki.sunkencastles.com/wiki/The_Black_Woman

St George is sometimes associated with the colour green, vegetation and fertility. This links to the dragon, as these beasts were blamed for making land barren by obstructing or poisoning water sources. They often lived in or near rivers, lakes and wells. By slaying them, heroes allowed pure waters to flow and made the land fruitful again. #MythologyMonday #folklore #mythology #history

Once, a noble lord befriended a boar when he saved him from a wolf pit. But the noble was a villain, and the boar pandered to his worst instincts. #MythologyMonday https://wiki.sunkencastles.com/wiki/The_Birenpaul_in_the_Kehrberg_Forest

Another great collection of folk tales is "Mythen und Sagen Tirols" by Johann Nepomuk von Alpenburg. Not only are the local legends of the Tyrolean Alps endlessly fascinating, but I recognize the author for a fellow folklore enthusiast with _views_ - which he is never shy about sharing them with his readers. #MythologyMonday https://wiki.sunkencastles.com/wiki/Category:Alpenburg_-_Mythen_und_Sagen_Tirols

A group of dead farmers regularly meet at a crossroads near Mettmann in order to continue their bowling games as they did in life. And since they lack proper bowling gear, they use their own bones instead. #MythologyMonday https://wiki.sunkencastles.com/wiki/The_Bowling_Farmers

Some of the most curious English ghost stories relate to 'screaming skulls'. A famous one is housed at Burton Agnes Hall, Yorkshire. It is said to have belonged to Anne Griffith, whose father built the Hall. Anne had watched in amazement as the Hall was constructed, declaring it would be the most wonderful home ever built. Shortly after it was finished, however, she was fatally wounded by robbers. As she lay dying, she made her sisters promise they would sever her corpse's head and keep it in the Hall, but Anne was buried conventionally in the local churchyard. The Hall was, thereafter, tormented with groans and poltergeist activity until the family had Anne exhumed and decapitated. As long as the skull stayed in the Hall, everything was fine, but - over the years - several attempts to remove it led to supernatural disturbances. The skull remains in the Hall today. Nobody is sure of the exact location, but it's said to be bricked up in a wall. #gothic #folklore #history #paranormal #ghosts #skull #skulls #death #mythologymonday #graveyard

The Wildg'fahr is an alpine monster which makes a rustling noise like dried furs when it moves. This is because its skin rasps across its bones — it does not have any flesh. #MythologyMonday https://wiki.sunkencastles.com/wiki/The_Wildg%27fahr
