Just realized that here in London, I can say ‘I took the lift up to my flat after removing the items from the boot’ and people are going to understand me I also look forward to standing in a queue, and throwing away my rubbish In the afternoon, I shall have some biscuits #English #Languages

In many Chinese families it’s pretty common for people to talk to each other in completely different languages. My New York aunt speaks to me in Mandarin / Hokkien. She speaks to her husband in Toishanese. They speak Cantonese to other people. We all sort of understand each other when we are speaking different languages, but respond in our own language. From time to time we might dip into another language to illustrate a point. My grandma used to call this ‘chicken and duck talk’ #Languages #Chinese

I found this reply that I made in 1984 to Dennis Ritchie in the net.followup newsgroup. I was at the time lobbying Sun to add 8-bit character set support to the firmware, but they wanted to hold out for a 16-bit system, like the as yet unnamed Unicode. There was eventually an interim solution but my memory of that is a bit foggy. #Usenet #DennisRitchie #C #Pascal #emacs #VT100 #charactersets #languages #Swedish #programming #unicode #SunMicrosystems #Värmland

An interesting journey in story form, showing how English changed over time. https://www.deadlanguagesociety.com/p/how-far-back-in-time-understand-english #english #languages

For our new members. In every post, you have the option to set the language in which your post is written. This is an important feature. People can set which languages they want to see. If you set the wrong language, the post will be hidden from people who could read it. In addition, the translation function needs this information, because otherwise your post cannot be translated. #languages #translation #mastodon #introductionary
