Finally! 🎉 I've been seeing male orange tip butterflies (Anthocharis cardamines) for weeks now, but they never stopped to be photographed. Even this one today, on the Königstuhl, was flitting from flower to flower, making it hard to get close with my iPhone. Despite the continued cool weather & apparent lack of much going on, lunchtime in the garden proved decently productive. First, a small groundhopper nymph, likely genus Tetrix. Being more specific is tricky, but T. undulata, the common groundhopper (🇩🇪 Gemeine Dornschrecke) is my best guess. Next, one of the bigger & buzzier flies in our garden – the common tachnid (Tachina fera; 🇩🇪 Schwarzfühler-Borstenfliege). Closely related to Nowickia ferox, which we also have, the latter being generally darker – hope to see one later. Now turning to a couple of bees. First, this red mason bee (Osmia bicornis; 🇩🇪 Rote Mauerbiene) was hanging around the new bee hotel, & may have been responsible for filling & capping one or more of the wooden holes & bamboo tubes. Next a new bee species for me, albeit rather distinctive. This is an ashy mining bee (Andrena cineraria; 🇩🇪 Aschgraue Sandbiene or Grauschwarze Düstersandbiene). Finally & rather more ominously for the bees, an early sighting of an Asian or yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina; 🇩🇪 Asiatische Hornisse). Predators on bees, they've become so prevalent in Europe in recent years, the German govt has largely given up on trying to eradicate them.
