To survive out of the water, it developed a strong skeleton to support its weight and waterproof skin to keep from drying out. It moved with a sprawling gait, using flexible wrist joints to navigate the terrain. Most importantly, it laid shelled eggs, allowing it to reproduce far away from the water.
