There's this game 'Dungeon Encounters' which is mesmerisingly brilliant in how it distills the JRPG down to essentially elements. It's like a 2D grid and numbers. Only later you realise it's actually a 3D grid. A lot of JRPG franchises started as very numbers-cenric, but over time they have headed towards grandiose storytelling.
