For individuals with metabolic syndrome, a two-day calorie-restricted diet of oats produced a 10 percent decrease in LDL. The reduction persisted for 6 weeks. A six-week lower-dose supplementation with oats was not as effective. The gut microbiome shifted to increase metabolism of phenols, and those metabolites may have a role in LDL reduction.
