Julia Phillips - Bear
Tykkäsin Julia Phillipsin Katoava maa -debyytistä (englanniksi Disappearing Earth). Siksi tartuin tähän romaaniin suurin odotuksin ja petyin. Ympäristö on jälleen kiehtova - ollaan Seattlen lähellä saaristossa lauttareittien takana luonnon keskellä. Kaksi lähes kolmekymppistä sisarusta, Elena ja Sam, hoitavat kuolemansairasta äitiään ja haaveilevat muutosta ihmisten ilmoille. Kun talon lähellä alkaa vierailla harmaakarhu, Sam järkyttyy, mutta Elena ihastuu. Vähitellen suhde karhuun repii sisarukset erilleen.
Miksi petyin kirjaan? Kertomus tuntui epäuskottavalta ja laahaavalta. Kertojana toimiva Sam oli hankala hahmo, joka ei kasvanut kirjan aikana ja jonka toiminta ei ollut tarpeeksi perusteltua. Juonta oli juuri ja juuri sen verran, että lukeminen kiinnosti, mutta mukaansa kirja ei tempaissut missään vaiheessa. Alkuasetelma oli kyllä kiinnostava, mutta kokonaisuus jää valjuksi. Oletin kirjan käsittelevän myös ihmisyyden ja eläimyyden suhdetta syvällisemmin, mutta aika pinnalliseksi sekin jäi. Höh.
