@kinosian@mastodon.sdf.org @erikMondrian@fosstodon.org First of all, you assume I came to #SecondLife knowing these things. I had been in virtual worlds before but the rules of existence were completely different. My first thought was "why the hell are we passed so many damn notecards?" There were no mentors or anyone greeting me at my landing infohub in the Snowlands. The Help Island had no one to help me because the mentors were too busy socializing with others. I put a box on my arm. They did nothing to explain anything. This was 2008 when there was less to learn for avatars. Supposedly. Also less to offer males, so maybe that's also why mentors didn't help. Nobody explained how you can't take some things off from your body, only replace them. Sculpts were brand new at the time & they hadn't yet permeated fashion. A mentor finally broke off from gesture spamming long enough to tell me to check out Vienna Freebies where I put blue furry fox parts on me. At least I didn't have those sucky clothes offered males on Help Islands. Also I didn't wear freakin' blocky shoes. To give ANYONE a concept of #SecondLife from the outside I link them some World Makers videos by Draxtor Despres. Then they see the difference between SL & videogames. Because guess what? Nothing changes at infohubs. It's still about excessive gestures, predatory people trying to bite or recruit or scam them, & attachment competitions. Now if you have something different going in the new meshy Linden Homes orientation regions then I'm sure there's enough information w/videos showing layering & common sense. If not then why not? Torley's videos were gold when I arrived. They're still on YouTube & most are still applicable. Nobody told me to click & drag folders to change my look. Tindy taught me about linking instead of copying components. TBH what I see around SL of those who have been here for years I don't think the newcomer learning curve is so far behind. In the end it's learning by doing & word of mouth.

Reminds me of the "casting call" by Firestorm to ask why yea many people who still use their pre-PBR viewer and want them to reach out and explain why. What if I told you that Tindy and I use the "vintage" skin with Hybrid Mode in FS? To me the new media interface makes no sense. I have problems with their new inventory system and what they expect of me, so i don't use it. But I do wish I could add my own root folders alphabetized among their own. When you say lip syncing do you refer to mesh heads or classic? There's a different system for mesh heads which makes syncing impossible (Miko did her whole makeover with the intention of doing podcasts from SL, then abandoned the plan). #SecondLife

@erikMondrian@fosstodon.org I'm not sure what you mean but I think most things I coveted when I started I am happy they've evolved beyond it. Such as default skins, old crude landscaping with laggy, over-LI elements, mainlanders not changing their parcel EEP to something better than perpetual total solar eclipse... Oh and badly made sculpted builds that are big sphere (all they need to do is add the sculpt texture either on an inside/hidden face of link a small alpha prim with it). And not turn things phantom that need to be. Oh and clack clack sounds on high heels or bling on shiny objects (I can forgive the latter if it's not overwhelming & you love a no-mod gem of yesteryear). #SecondLife

The big parcel next to mine changed hands again, and a large modern rental house suddenly loomed over my little virtual farm in #SecondLife. Realized tonight that the parcel it was on was set for sale, and I had enough group holdings after upgrading 3 alts to swing it. Now I have the fun of virtual landscaping, plenty of prims to work with, and several fun virtual buildings I haven’t been able to play with for a while. My previous virtual neighbor had been there for at least 10 years; now all my parcels adjoin each other. There are some other large parcels available; it’s Mainland roadside, and previous owners had art galleries, forest parks, and farms. Maybe some folks in the pod riders group might be interested? We’re near a road junction.
