Space Weather Ops Dashboard I've released another update today (version #260407.3). The DRAP map includes a flashing indicator to show which base location is active in the path estimator table. Two new (optional) columns have been added to the path estimator: The GREYLINE column shows when the sunrise/sunset terminator is crossing the midpoint of a radio path — grey line conditions can briefly boost long-distance signals as the D-layer fades but the F-layer stays strong. The ↓F number tells you how many solar flux units (SFU) conditions can deteriorate before your best open band closes — the lower the number, the more fragile the opening. The ↑K number shows how much the geomagnetic storm index (Kp) can rise before the path degrades — useful during unsettled space weather when conditions can change quickly. Please go to the launch page or reload the page to ensure you're using the latest version. https://www.tvcomm.co.uk/g7izu/space-weather-ops/ #spaceweather #radiopropagation #amateurradio #g7izu

Space Weather Geomagnetic conditions have calmed and are now at G1 levels. Solar wind speed is is just under 700km/s with the Bz between 0 and -5nT. #spaceweather #aurora #g7izu

Radio Propagation 3D fly-through showing 10m and 6m propagation between South and North America, recorded just now. The orange clouds (which are drawn a bit too bright!) denote zones of signal refraction for TEP (Trans-Equatorial-Propagation). #radiopropagation #amateurradio #g7izu

Space Weather Aurora reported by amateur radio operators down to ~50°N over Europe. A G1-G2 geomagnetic storm is in progress. #spaceweather #radiopropagation #aurora #g7izu

Space Weather A small eruption from AR4403 at 22h20 UT 01 March caused this small flare and CME. An even smaller eruption from AR4407 to the east is also visible in this video from NASA/SDO AIA304. Neither flare exceeded C5.8. A type II radio emission was detected, confirming a CME that went northwards. Meanwhile at Earth, we're still in the ragged edge of the previous CME which started affecting us yesterday. Geomagnetic conditions have fluctuated overnight with brief G1-G2 conditions being observed. Minor aurora affected higher latitudes. #spaceweather #aurora #g7izu

Radio Propagation The VHF/UHF FT8 Activity Contest kicked off at 18h UT. See the contesters on this flythrough aver Europe. 2m band contacts are the red lines, and as the contacts are mostly tropospheric, the signals are hugging the surface of the planet within a few km. It's fitting that Dave, G7RAU (and author of LiveMUF) is one of the contacts seen in this video (at the bottom end of Cornwall). #radiopropagation #amateurradio #g7izu

Space Weather Although a CME shock was detected at L1, we now appear to be brushing the edge of the CME "sheath" and are not fully within the structure. The full force of the CME passed well to the southeast of Earth during the past 24 hours. The two "legs" of the structure are slowly pushing sideways and one is starting to interact with Earth's magnetosphere. It may take a few more hours for us to see the full geomagnetic effects. The earlier mentioned coronal hole just to the west of the flare location is retraining the westward extent of the CME. We'll see the fast solar wind from the coronal hole in a couple of days. #spaceweather #g7izu

Space Weather Ops Dashboard I've done a final update (for the time-being!) on the Space Weather Ops dashboard. Numerous fixes for a number of coding errors! Audio and Pushover alerts have been worked on so that alert "flooding" is avoided during major events. I'm hoping that the incoming solar storm will give it a thorough test! Space Weather Ops dashboard The dashboard on my site has been updated so that it's more responsive on mobile displays. Today I also made a number of refinements, including the addition of sending alerts to a Pushover account (click the Push button above the Event Log panel). A free Pushover account is needed. The number of parameters that can trigger alerts has also been expanded. https://www.tvcomm.co.uk/g7izu/files/SpaceWeatherOps.html #spaceweather #g7izu

Space Weather A X1.5 flare from AR4405 (in the south-east quadrant) peaked at 03h19 UT 30 March. A strong R3 radio blackout affected the western Pacific, Far Eastern and Australasian regions. A type II radio emission was observed. A CME was observed. Confidence is not high for a big solar storm, although Nasa modelling now suggests a big hit is possible. Whatever the outcome, there will likely be increased chances for aurora photographers in the coming days. #spaceweather #g7izu

Radio Propagation While we wait for the sporadic-E season to get going properly, here's a demonstration fly-through of this afternoon's global 10m to 2m band propagation, recorded live from amateur radio DX Cluster data with a five-minute cadence, at 17h07 UT 28 March. The yellow lines denote 10m contacts. As you can see, there's not much going on above the 10m band at the time of the recording. All the lower bands have been supressed so as to make 10m clearer. The number of hops and reflection locations any particular signal path makes is estimated and not real, but is based upon real factors such as ionosphere height, propagation mode and the MUF. Different frequencies reach different heights, as future videos will show. #radiopropagation #amateurradio #g7izu

New Website Addition I've just release a new space weather and amateur radio dashboard on my website. "Space Weather Ops" is a collection of live data indicators, graphs and data panels showing live solar wind and information derived form the amateur radio DX Cluster. Space Weather Geomagnetic Storm Expected Soon A Geomagnetic Storm of up to G2 level is predicted starting midnight UT this evening (19 March). A G1 watch is in effect for 20 March. An incoming CME from the M2.8 eruption on 16 March is expected to hit Earth more-or-less straight-on between approx 21h tonight and 12h midday tomorrow. A second, smaller CME may reach us on the 21st. #spaceweather #g7izu
