February 25 marks the birthday of Commedia dell'Arte and is celebrated around the world with performances and instruction! Several years we developed a short rapid-fire farce to demonstrate many of the common characters, tropes, elements, and plot lines of a typical commedia scenario in under three minutes! Commedia arose in the 16th Century Italian Renaissance as a theatrical art form specializing in slapstick farce where actors often wore half-face masks to embody stock characters and improvise a full play using a brief outline scenario. Commedia would be an international sensation and pave the way for women to act openly on stage and has inspired theatre and entertainment for centuries since. Today we honor this amazing Italian cultural heritage that is at the core of our troupe!
